Gargoyle in progress
This is still very much in progress. It should be done in 2 days. It’s a “commission” from my husband. Everyone has their preconceived ideas about gargoyles, mine would definitely be grotesque. His is scary. Hope he’ll like it, because I’m having a hard time with it.
Tomorrow I’ll start working on the head and do more detail.
Day 2
Day 3
I’ve brought down the ears, they look better, I think. He looks pissed off, which is good.
Showed it to my husband, he liked it, but found his face a little old, which is true. I tried to change it a bit, not too much, or it might go from wolf to lamb. I don’t know if I’ll add a wing at this point. Don’t feel up to it.
Day 3
With base. My buddy might get claws (if I can stick something so small on). It just needs to dry, then I need to paint it and seal it.

My guess is the monster will have a fierce dog-like head. I wonder which kind of dog–one with a long snout or a flatter bulldog mug. You’ve given the man a dog’s pose very cleverly.
Thanks Swallows. He’s got his head. I don’t know how scary that is. I’m not sure about the ears. He wants wings too (sigh). And it needs a base. And the final version will have to be bigger (about 15″) and waterproof. I guess I have to make a mold somehow. Is plaster ok for outdoors? Or should I go with cement?
He is so fine, Erika, I am very impressed.
He’s mean all right. No, plaster won’t do for outdoors, no matter how you treat it. Have you ever made a mold for a three-dimensional figure? It’s tricky. My advice is: don’t try one on this figure if you want to save him. The undercutting in the front is going to get you into trouble. Make a clay copy, for instance, and try to make a mold of that as an experiment. Once you see the difficulties you will start sculpting your figures with the mold-making in mind.
Birgitte, it’s not finished yet. Hopefully, you won’t be disappointed with the end result.
Swallows, I’m reading you can work concrete directly, that would be the best. I just doubt it allows enough time for detail. So you have to make your pieces more compact if you want to make molds?
Love the gargoyle!
I didn’t know you used me as the model!!!!
You’re so silly, Nigel!
