Sundancers: linocut collage

My second linocut  prints did not come out very nice, still loved the faulty prints’ interesting textures.

And because I hated the idea of tossing out so many of them ( I had at least 10), decided to recycle at least part of them and use them as collage pieces. I love collage, so this was a good chance of creating my first piece.

I titled the piece Sisterhood, but it’s not final.

The first version turned out like this. I’ve decided to use the second one.

Maybe I should make the first version too, by using a different colour scheme. Starting to like the idea.

Here’s the final version. I added more colour, and more texture. I think I’ll title it Sundancers.

  1. I like the first one–the girls on a white background. The rhythm. Of course one thinks of Matisse. The sun is a good idea but I’m sorry for the predictable distribution of the ladies.

  2. I’m partial to the first one, too. I like the way the legs of the upper figures begin to create a vortex of energy, drawing you to the center of it, then the two arms and one leg of the lower figures provide a counter. Interesting.

  3. Now I definitely need to finish the first one too. I really don’t know why did I go with the more conventional composition. Beginner’s need of safety?
Of course Matisse came to mind, but hope mine is not too reminiscent of his collages.
I really like the shadows of the first one, I’ll paint them on the next one. I was quite taken by the power of repetition, and how much movement can be created from the variations of a single stance.

  4. What did I see today in the art section of the bookstore? A book of Matisse’s cutouts. Some reminded me of child at play, even himself called them his “toys” and decorated his house with them. His blue nudes of which I only saw two previously, wow, they were incredible. Of only a few simple shapes he created amazing works of art.

  5. All the collages are rather attractive. I agree with 100swallows: the first, one–the girls on a white background, is my favorite. There’s a different rhythm to the design and the 2D effect of collage is more apparent.

  6. Thanks MadSilence, I agree with both of you.

  7. They are all beautiful, in form and colors. I would like to see more of this.
