Pompeii Resurrected

I was looking at the plaster castings of the unfortunate people of Pompeii the other day, and I couldn’t get those images out of my head. So I thought I would bring them back to life in my own way, in this sculpture:

They have certainly resurrected. But did you raise them up only to be ashed on again? Are they screaming to the Heavens? I like the guy with the big hands best. Don’t you fight with the internal wire supports all the time with figures like these? I always used to have the wires sticking out everywhere.
Strange that those Pompeii figures should make such an impression on us when we have all the recent photos of the poor earthquake victims of our own time.

They are rising up from the ash. The original idea was a glorious return, but maybe it isn’t entirely…represented only by the figure with the raised arms. That’s the one I like most too. I was more preoccupied with their faces. I wanted them to look not quite living and not quite dead, best achieved with the above mentioned figure.
The wires don’t give me as much trouble as before. I guess all roadblocks can be overcome by practice. What needs to be adressed is capturing the “right” gesture on the armature…
